Over the centuries man has used the Great Lakes as a main artery of transportation.  During that time thousands of boats and ships have gone to the bottom taking with them cargo and crew.  Yet not all losses on the lakes have been ships.  Aircraft, beginning from the infancy of flight, have also disappeared in the waters of the Great Lakes.  The lakes have been the demise of hundreds of aircraft, ranging from early hot air balloons, to private and commercial aircraft, to military airplanes, including one of the most daunting aircraft in the USAF fleet, a Boeing B-52C Stratofortress.
